Cupcake-cake

Mar 09, 2010

I wanted to make a big cupcake for my niece’s first birthday, but wasn’t sure how to go about it. Because I’m a big geek, I made a pretty elaborate plan before I started, including dimensions and ideas for what I would use for all the different parts of the cake. The plan helped quite a bit, and it turned out pretty close to what I was hoping for.

Here’s what I did incase you want to try something similar:

For the cupcake I baked a few small round cakes and cut them into layers, and then built two cylindrical towers out of the layers with icing between each. I stuck both in the freezer for a bit, and then used a knife to trim one into a cone shape for the top, and one into a tapered cylinder for the bottom (i find cake crumbles less when cut if it is partially frozen … but not completely frozen…then it’s just really hard to cut). I iced the bottom of the cupcake with dark icing and the top cone part with light icing. I stuck little slabs of melted chocolate directly to the icing on the bottom for the paper part of the cupcake. The ‘icing’ on the cupcake is a long tube of white fondant which I cut in half and laid over the cone shaped cake in a spiral.  The polka dots on the bottom layer are made out of two different things; the cream, brown and yellow ones are those little chocolate melt things you can buy, and the pink ones are fondant that I cut to the same size. The candle is a little chocolate covered cookie called a ‘fiddle stick’ I think which I wrapped in fondant, and the bow is fondant and is stuck onto the cake with a toothpick.

In this picture you can see my plan in the background – and yes I drew it from both a top and a side view – big geek
