Double the fun!

Feb 28, 2010

My (twin) nieces recently turned 6.  They told me they were having a Princess AND Tinkerbell party and wanted their cake to be pink and purple and in the shape of a crown.  My mind was spinning about how to accomplish this…  One day I might try a crown shaped cake – but not yet!  So I drew up some sketches (I am not the artist in the family so please be kind as I post these) and let my imagination work and here’s what I came up with!

Last year I made them a two-tiered cake so this year I thought they might appreciate each having their own cake!  I made the crowns and fairy wands out of sugar cookies.  The icing is a combination of regular sugar cookie glaze and fondant…

I didn’t think too far beyond the pink on pink and purple on purple colour combination in my sketch so when I got to the actual decorating of the crowns I had no idea what colour to choose.  That ended up being the hardest part for me with these cakes (actually choosing colours and then trying to make the colours I chose is ALWAYS the hardest part for me to do!)    Here’s how they turned out:  (they didn’t look quite like this after I delivered them due to some unfortunate contact with snow showers! but I think they still loved them! ) HAPPY BIRTHDAY A & N!!

These are fantastic. I think they turned out wonderfully well. How did you get the sugar cookie crowns to stand up so nicely on top?
