FONDANT – huh?

Feb 15, 2010

Lisa started working with fondant before me – I have to say it totally intrigued me!  It looks like play-dough or plastic or something else you shouldn’t eat.  So I decided to try it.  First of all – What is it?  The way we make it it’s marshmallows and icing sugar – definitely something you SHOULD eat.  It gets rolled and then moulded and then presto – like magic – a smooth, perfect cake!

Rolled and ready to cover

This cake was for my Mother-in-law’s birthday last spring.  I LOVE anything monogrammed so I knew I wanted to have the K on there, but I couldn’t figure out how to “finish” it off so I quickly emailed a photo to my husband and brother-in-law, and it was Eric who suggested the mini-balls around the white circle – perfect!

Ok…so question for you!…yes, another one!! why does your cake look so perfect, and so WHITE BEFORE you’ve even covered it with fondant??…do you put something in between the cake & the fondant???….it looks like its made of white cardboard!!!

yep, it's iced first with regular icing. That way you smooth out any bumps, indents and the transition between the layers. Whatever shape your cake is in will show through the fondant because it's so soft and mouldable.
